Olivier Rochus books a spot in the Auckland final after a three-set win over Philipp Kohlschreiber on Friday. Rochus awaits either David Ferrer or Fernando Verdasco.
Olivier Rochus came back from a set deficit to defeat Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-7(4), 6-1, 6-4 in the semifinals of the Heineken Open on Friday afternoon. Rochus converted six of nine break chances and prevailed after two hours and 28 minutes.
Kohlschreiber trailed by a break twice in the first set only to recover right away each time. The German broke back for 1-1 and again to force a tiebreaker after Rochus served for it at 6-5. Kohlschreiber gave back two early mini-breaks, but he regained control and took the 'breaker seven points to four.
Rochus turned the tide swiftly and decisively in the second. The 5'6'' Belgian capitalized on both of his break-point opportunities and dropped only eight points in four service games. A routine hold at 5-1 set up a third and final frame of play.
With momentum in hand, Rochus seemed to be well on his way to victory when he broke quickly in set three. Kohlschreiber, though, was not about to go away quietly and he got the break back for 3-3. The world No. 42, however, tossed in his first double-fault of the day at 4-4 and that led to a decisive break. In the 10th game, Rochus squandered three match points and saved one break point before clinching the win with a service winner.
Rochus, through to his second career Auckland final, will go up against either David Ferrer or Fernando Verdasco for the title.
