  • Ferrer rolls over Verdasco, into Auckland final

Ferrer rolls over Verdasco, into Auckland final David Ferrer takes care of Fernando Verdasco in straight sets on Friday in Auckland. Ferrer will defend his title against Olivier Rochus.

David Ferrer is back in the Heineken Open final after easing past fellow Spaniard Fernando Verdasco 6-3, 6-4 on Friday. Ferrer never faced a break point as he advanced after one hour and 29 minutes.

Both players were playing their second matches of the day at this rain-delayed Auckland event. Ferrer needed three sets to get past Alejandro Falla in the semis, but Verdasco stayed on court even longer to beat countryman Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in straights.

Ferrer, as he often does against all opponents, clearly had more left in the tank. The world No. 5 raced to 3-0 lead and although he failed on nine of 10 break-point chances in the first set, one conversion was enough. Ferrer dropped only seven points in five service games and he closed out the set to love at 5-4.

Verdasco mostly held serve with greater ease in set two, but again one donation was one too many. The No. 3 seed never came close to getting back on serve after an early break, again winning only seven points in five return games. Ferrer wrapped things up with a huge first serve at 40-15 in the 10th game of the set.

Seeded first and defending his 2011 title, Ferrer will go up against Olivier Rochus in the final on Saturday. Rochus ousted former champion Philipp Kohlschreiber in the first semifinal.
