Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga became the second recent tournament winner to withdraw from the AAMI Classic Australian open tune-up event as he pulled out to save himself for the Grand Slam.
Tsonga's pullout for fatigue followed that of Canadian Milos Raonic. Both men failed to negotiate jet-lag after winning matches many time zones away. Tsonga claimed the Doha title last weekend while Raonic won the second of his career by taking out the trophy in Chennai, India.
But the No. 6 remained bullish over his Open chances at Melbourne Park -- the first major of the season which starts on Monday.
"I have big expectations, but not because I won in Doha. I've expected to play well since I was a kid starting in the game, It's my dream to win a grand slam," said the 2008 Melbourne runner-up to Novak Djokovic. I'm trying to improve my game to do that.
"I hope to make a push against the top four (Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Andy Murray), if I can do that it would be something really big for me."
