The hunger for victory always evident in Marcos Baghdatis has been soothed this week in Sydney by his grandmother's home cooking.
"I have lots of family here and my grandmother lives here," said the smiling Cypriot after beating top seed Juan Martin Del Potro 7-6, 6-4.
"I've been having a good time eating plenty of food from my grandmother."
The 2006 Australian Open finalist has always been noted as a trencherman. Melbourne tabloids have made a meal out of his exploits at local Greek restaurants in heavily ethnic Melbourne, which boasts more Greeks than anywhere else save the mother country.
During his 2006 run to the final against Roger Federer, the current No. 43 would consistently set his own training path, chowing down on souvlaki and other protein-heavy delights from his homeland.
Baghdatis won the Sydney title in 2010 and is making what is looking like a very successful return after several seasons of poor results and injuries. He is coached by Andy Murray castoff Miles MacLagan.
The 26-year-old enjoys huge support in Australia with its massive population of ex-countrymen.
