Philipp Kohlschreiber books a spot in the Auckland semifinals by taking out Nicolas Almagro on Thursday. Kohlschreiber will meet Olivier Rochus for a spot in the title match.
Philipp Kohlschreiber beat Nicolas Almagro 7-6(5), 6-4 in the quarterfinals of the Heineken Open on Thursday afternoon. Kohlschreiber never dropped serve and earned the first break of the day in the last game of the match to advance after one hour and 34 minutes.
Almagro dominated on serve the entire way in the first set, while Kohlschreiber saved two break points en route to forcing a tiebreaker. The Spaniard's first serve suddenly failed him and that allowed his opponent to get into rallies and play aggressive tennis. Kohlschreiber capitalized and took the 'breaker seven points to five after twice battling back from mini-breaks down.
Both players cruised on serve throughout the first nine games of set two. Kohlschreiber did not face a break point and applied pressure as Almagro served to stay in the proceedings at 4-5. The German went up 30-40 and Almagro threw it all away with a double-fault on match point.
Kohlschreiber, the 2008 tournament champion, finished with nine aces and just one double-fault. Next up for the eighth seed is Olivier Rochus, a 6-3, 6-7(5), 7-6(4) winner over Benoit Paire.
