Jet-lag from jaunts halfway around the world have caught up with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Milos Raonic in the run-up to the Australian Open.
The pair of weekend ATP title winners were defeated at the AAMI Classic exhibition in Melbourne with Tsonga taking a loss and Raonic taking a walk.
Tsonga, the Doha winner from France, lost his opening match 6-4, 6-3 to a more refreshed Jurgen Melzer of Austria. Raonic was also beaten, losing 6-1, 6-2 to American Mardy Fish and later forced to pull out with stomach upset.
The four-day event is considered the top tuneup for the Open which begins Monday. Another trophy-holder was also defeated. Czech Tomas Berdych - his nation won the Hopman Cup in Perth - lost to Bernard Tomic 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
"I'm not feeling very well. I still have jet-lag. We train a lot and we all want to be ready for the Open," said Tsonga of his wind-whipped opening match at Kooyong club. It's difficult to play in the wind. I'm not used to it anymore. I play most of my matches in big stadiums where there is little wind. When we return to conditions like this, it's difficult for us."
Raonic said that he will need to start afresh when the Open begins. "The most important things are going to be staying hungry, as much as recovering physically from not only the tennis but also the travelling.
"It's going to be also important to recover mentally and just understand last week was last week, and this week you're turning up with zero and you've just got to build from there. Obviously you can carry the confidence through, but as far as satisfaction you have nothing to be satisfied with."
