Ferrer, Almagro advance in Auckland David Ferrer kicks off his Auckland campaign with a straight-set victory over Lukas Rosol on Wednesday. Ferrer is joined in the quarterfinals by Nicolas Almagro, an easy winner against Santiago Giraldo.

    (1) David Ferrer d. Lukas Rosol 6-4, 6-2

Coming off a brilliant 2011 campaign, Ferrer opened his season with a convincing win over Rosol during second-round action at the Heineken Open on Wednesday afternoon. Ferrer, the top seed and defending champion, converted three of four break chances and never faced a break point before advancing to the quarterfinals in exactly one hour.

Rosol came out with confidence and held his first three service games in impressive fashion. However, the 74th-ranked Czech dropped serve at 3-3 in the opener and from there it was all over. Ferrer served out set one at 5-4 then broke at 1-1 in the second to completely run away from his opponent. Next up for the fifth-ranked Spaniard is Alejandro Falla.

    (2) Nicolas Almagro d. Santiago Giraldo 6-4, 6-2

One of two Top 10 players in action this week on the ATP Tour, Almagro started his final preparation for the Australian Open in impressive fashion on Wednesday in Auckland. The No. 2 seed enjoyed an unbelievable day on serve, blasting 11 aces without double-faulting and losing a miniscule six points in nine service games. He advanced to the quarterfinals after one hour and eight minutes, booking a clash against Philipp Kohlschreiber.

Giraldo managed to stay on serve en route to a 4-4 tie in the first set, but it all fell apart with the Colombian leading 40-0 in the ninth game. He lost five points in a row to get broken and ended the set on a nine-point losing streak. Almagro promptly raced away with set two, earning breaks in the third and fifth games of the set. The Spaniard dropped only two service points in the second and wrapped up the proceedings with a routine hold at 5-2.
