  • Del Potro says tennis elite ready to chase Djokovic

    1/11/12 8:26 PM | Johan Lindahl
Del Potro says tennis elite ready to chase Djokovic Argentine Juan Martin Del Potro has set himself a goal of re-joining the elite and hope for the chance to chase 2011 trendsetter Novak Djokovic during this new season.

As world No. 1, Djokovic is the target for his rival, rivals led by Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.

But former No. 4 Del Potro, now fit after two seasons of wrist surgery and a shoulder injury, is ready to try and challenge as well.

"I think Roger and Rafa will be going after Novak because they don't want him to repeat the year he just had," said Del Potro, playing his only Australian Open warmup event in Sydney. "What Djokovic did, it very difficult for him to do again. The only three who could possibly do what he did last season are Roger, Rafa and Novak."

Del Potro is back to an 11th ranking after improving from 485th this time a year ago. "I'm feeling good, I've have trained at home and I am ready. I'm in good shape and want to play many, many matches. The first tournament of the year is difficult.

"I need to keep playing points and matches to keep improving my level. My comeback year went better than I expected. If I stay healthy I think I have a good chance to win a lot of matches this year."

Delpot looked rusty, slow, unfit and grumpy. Good luck with Nole then!

In all fairness, DelPo ALWAYS looks a little grumpy....

cherylmurray , 1/12/12 7:58 PM

cheryl, he WAS really grumpy! All Baggy's relatives were in the crowd and he complained to the ref about them...:)

deuce , 1/12/12 8:03 PM

I'm always amused when players do that. What exactly do they expect the referee to do? Kick people out because they're cheering? It's not like he's having tea with the queen or something!

The Cypriot is one of the easiest players to root for,him being such a charismatic person and entertaining player. He said afterwards that no one asked him how did he feel when he played against Agassi in his last US Open match in front of 23000 Agassi supporters in the crowd.
As for Del Potro, he does not know where Cyprus is,is it near Australia or whatever LOL
He wandered how Baggy got so much support.

Well... This is surprise!
No 2,3 and 4 will chase No1 !
I was sure that they shall chase No500...

So what was done a few years back when Roger complained about Nole's family? Didn't Roger tell the family to "shut-up!" I think a reprimand or whatever is better coming from the ump than a player. And if their too obnoxious then you should be able to kick them out. I've seen obnoxious fans get thrown out. On the other hand if it's family screaming their hearts out for their own, then nothing to be done.

The top players not only have their eyes on Nole, they've got an eye out for JMDP too because they know he's a threat to each of them. Last year this time his fans were all over he internet with how he was going to win it all. Not so much this year, which is a shame, because it's much more likely to happen this year. I like the big Teddy Bear and hope he has a great tournament.

Maya... ExFed didn't complained... He just used a ( veryyyyyyy) good way to pissed young and inexperienced Nole...
Hehe... That doesn't work anymore :)
BTW... Why now Maya? What makes you now to write about that?

zare , 1/13/12 8:24 PM

He didn't used "shut-up" but "be-quiet" and that's different!!

mani4Tennis , 1/13/12 9:47 PM

^^^^^ right!

zare - I thought of it after reading certain comments above about family and crowd noise at tournaments. I remember seeing an outtake on the tube with Roger shushing the Djokovich family. Wasn't sure what was said, shut-up or be quiet, but either way I think it would have been better for an umpire to handle the situation than leave it to the players. I don't think Roger did it as a ploy at all. Whatever was going on in Nole's box was making Roger pretty angry.

Maya , 1/14/12 2:02 AM

Delpot actually asked the ref. if Davis Cup rules applied and he could dock a point from Baggy because of his relatives behaviour. That's pretty grumpy!

deuce , 1/14/12 7:52 AM

I didn't get a chance to see this match. Maybe the tennis channel will show it. However, Delpo has no problem when the crowd is cheering for him. I remember in Miami, where there are a lot of Argentinians, he really played to them in his matches.

cheryl,

You made me laugh! "Tea with the queen or something"! Too funny!

Nativenewyorker , 1/14/12 7:59 AM

Nole hit a ball on the line and it was called out, his box reacted to that - no big deal it wasn't like they were heckling Federer during points. I'm not saying Federer should have restricted himself but I don't understand why Nole's box is always made out to be in the wrong where that particular incident was concerned. Of course, its been made out to be that way because of the bloated Federer bandwagon.

samprallica , 1/14/12 8:27 AM

^^^^^^^"bloated Federer nadwagon", very funny!!!!
