Australian Bernard Tomic is determined not to succumb to any pressure as the 19-year-old strives to step into the shoes of Lleyton Hewitt. The teenager is playing as the local hope in the AAMI Classic this week at Kooyong club.
Tomic, up to a 37th ranking, is coming off a loss last week in the Brisbane semis to eventual champion Andy Murray. The youngster also made a breakthrough last summer with a Wimbledon quarterfinal. The eight-man special event at the former home of the Australian Open will be a big test for Tomic as the only Aussie in the field.
Tomic is already dismissing expectations. "It's one round at a time for me. It's not like when you're younger and think about how far you might go. You have to just try and beat the guy in front of you on the day.
"There's a lot of pressure going around, but I don't worry about what's off the court. I just have fun and play my tennis, I don't worry about anything else. Wherever this year takes me, it takes me. I'm not thinking about the ranking. It will come if I play well."
Tomic starts with a match against Tomas Berdych, who led the Czech Republic to victory last weekend in the Hopman Cup in Perth.
