Fifth seed Viktor Troicki is through to the second round in Sydney after rallying to oust former World No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt. Fellow seed Radek Stepanek also advanced, having upended veteran Xavier Malisse.

Fifth seed Viktor Troicki fought into the second round with a three-set victory over four-time Sydney champion Lleyton Hewitt. The Serbian collected 13 aces and five service breaks, through to a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win in two hours and four minutes. After trailing by a set and a break, Troicki broke serve twice in sets two and three.
He is slated to meet Alex Bogomolov in the next round. The American defeated Robin Haase in the first round, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4.
(8) Radek Stepanek def. Xavier Malisse 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-4
World No. 31 Radek Stepanek won his first round with a three-set ousting of Xavier Malisse early Monday. The Czech, victorious in Sydney for the first time since 2008, held fifteen of 16 service games through two hours and 29 minutes. He completed the effort with 14 aces and three breaks of serve.
Stepanek moves on to face qualifier Jarkko Nieminen in round two. The Finn dismissed James Duckworth in the first round, 6-2, 6-2.
