  • McEnroe says Lendl choice might work for Murray

    1/10/12 8:02 PM | Johan Lindahl
McEnroe says Lendl choice might work for Murray John McEnroe evaluates Andy Murray's chances with old rival Ivan Lendl.

There has never been any love lost between old-time rivals John McEnroe and Ivan Lendl, whom the notorious American once called a "scary robot." But even Mac has to agree that the Czech-American could be a good coaching fit for Andy Murray, still in the hunt for a first Grand Slam title after three defeats in finals.

Still, the praise was begrudging from McEnroe: "I hate to give credit to Lendl but Murray needed to do something out of the ordinary instead of going with the predictable re-tread.

"This is definitely something that was, to me, unexpected. I didn't know that Lendl wanted to coach. He could bring something to the table, without a doubt," he said of a long-ago rival whom he played 36 times.

Mac also sees some spooky similarities between the career of Lendl, 51, and the one that Murray is currently building.

"Lendl didn't win a major until he was 24 and guess what? Murray is 24 right now," said McEnroe, who lost a painful 1984 French Open final to Lendl, who try as he might could never win Wimbledon. "That could provide something worth it for Murray, I'm going to be paying attention to that, see how it works out."
