Ryan Harrison gets the best of Sam Querrey in an all-American clash on Tuesday in Auckland. Harrison advances to the second round and he awaits Philipp Kohlschreiber.
A battle between two American wild cards proved to be totally one-sided on Wednesday afternoon, as Ryan Harrison rolled over Sam Querrey 6-4, 6-3 during first-round action at the Heineken Open. Harrison struck three aces without double-faulting and advanced after one hour and nine minutes of play.
Harrison saved three break points early in the first set on the way to a 4-2 advantage. In the seventh game, however, the 19-year-old American gave the break back and things stayed on serve en route to a 5-4 Harrison lead. Querrey took the first two points while serving to stay in the set, but four straight errors threw it all away in his opponent's favor.
Making a slow recovery from an injury-plagued 2011 campaign, Querrey could not stay within striking distance in the second. The 6'6'' American missed an easy backhand volley to drop serve midway through the set and he never came close to getting back on level terms. Harrison dropped a mere five points in his last five service games. The world No. 84 missed three match points at 5-2, but he promptly served out the proceedings at love one game later.
"I played well," Harrison said afterward. "It was a good win for me. Getting the first win of the season is always exciting."
Next up for Harrison is Philipp Kohlschreiber, a three-set winner over Stephane Bohli.
