  • Murray takes extra confidence to Melbourne

    1/9/12 2:46 PM | Johan Lindahl
Murray takes extra confidence to Melbourne Andy Murray believes he's got the game - and possibly the confidence - to break his Grand Slam title duck after starting 2012 with a title in Brisbane.

The Scot was uncharacteristically all smiles after thrashing promising Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov and moving onto Melbourne for the January 16 start of the Australian Open.

Murray has lost the last two finals at Melbourne Park to Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic and was also beaten in a US Open final in New York by the Swiss. But that was the "old" Murray. The "new" Murray is now coached by former great Ivan Lendl.

"I'm a year wiser, I have a year more experience and I think I've improved a few things in my game," said the 24-year-old Scot. "I still played pretty good last year in Australia. I could play great tennis again and lose in the second round or the third round, that's how tennis works sometimes."

But Murray also saw his glass half-full, something of a change from his more usual dour outlook. "But equally I could win the tournament if I play my best. So I just need to show up, give 100 per cent every single point.

"If someone plays a great match to beat me, then that happens, but if I play well like I did this week I give myself a good chance."

Murray will train at Melbourne Park and is due for an informal exhibition with David Nalbandian within the confines of the AAMI Classic exho at Kooyong club, former home of the Open until the late 1980s.
