Alejandro Falla takes out eighth-seeded Donald Young in three sets on Monday in Auckland. Falla awaits either Albert Montanes or Potito Starace.
Donald Young went in as a seed but exited in the first round of the Heineken Open after falling to Alejandro Falla 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 on Monday afternoon. Falla dominated his opponent's second serves and earned five breaks before advancing in one hour and 58 minutes.
Young came out out firing and raced to a 4-0 advantage, breaking in the second and fourth games of the match. Falla was also to blame for his own poor start, as he served dismally and tossed in four double-faults during the first set. The veteran Colombian suddenly righted the ship and got back on serve at 4-5, but Young seized a third break to clinch the opening frame of play.
Falla had at least managed to play his way into the match, and it paid off with continued good play in the second. The world No. 80 broke for a 2-1 advantage and consolidated it the rest of the way. He won all eight of his second-serve points in set two and saved both of the break points he faced. For good measure Falla added another break at 5-3, capitalizing on his fourth set point with a winning forehand.
Falla maintained his momentum by showing nerves of steel in the third. He fought off a pair of break points in both the first and seventh games to stay in front and he converted a third chance in the eighth game for a 5-3 lead. Falla had no trouble serving it out to book his spot in the second round.
Next up for Falla is either Albert Montanes or Potito Starace.
