Alexandr Dolgoplov dispensed of the No. 2 seed Gilles Simon to move into the Brisbane International finals.
Alexandr Dolgopolov appears to be picking up where he left off at this time last year. In 2011, the Ukrainian came from out of nowhere to storm to the quarterfinals of the Australian Open – beating No. 5 seed Robin Soderling along the way. It wasn’t all smooth sailing for Dolgopolov last year, but he’s proven this week that his game is still plenty dangerous.
Dolgopolov’s most recent victim was the No. 2 seed Gilles Simon of France, who he dismissed 6-3, 6-4. Dolgoplov was particularly impressive in the first set, where his variety and especially his slices were on full display.
He tweaked his thigh in the second set and his level of play dropped for a bit in the middle of the frame, but he stayed mentally tough and in the end, Simon was nowhere near up to the challenge.
The win for Dolgopolov sends him into the finals against an in-form Andy Murray, who took out hometown favorite Bernard Tomic in his semifinal match.
