No. 2 seed Gilles Simon and Alexandr Dolgopolov will do battle on Saturday in the Brisbane semifinals.
This semifinal could be closely contested. Gilles Simon of France is ranked No. 12 in the world, the Ukraine’s Alexandr Dolgopolov is No. 15.
The two men have met once before almost exactly one year ago at the Australian Open tune-up event in Sydney. Simon won that match 6-4, 6-3, but Dolgolpolov has come a long way in a year’s time. The Ukrainian jumped in the rankings from No. 48 in the world all the way to his current No. 15.
Simon had a rough end to the 2011 season, with three straight losses. He appears to be rejuvenated now after the December off season and he will go into this encounter with his solid ground strokes and good movement.
Ultimately this match will likely hinge on how well Dolgopolov serves. Though his service motion is unconventional, he has a monster first serve that wins him plenty of free points.
Prediction – Dolgopolov for the win in 3.
