1/6/12 2:22 PM | Cheryl Murray
After struggling a bit in his first two matches, top seed Andy Murray regained his form against Marcos Baghdatis.
Andy Murray (1) def. Marcos Baghdatis 6-2, 6-2
Going into this match, Andy Murray had a 2-3 record against current doubles partner Marcos Baghdatis. The Cypriot, who beat Murray last in Rotterdam of last year, was no threat in this quarterfinal.
The first set was well-played by Murray, who dropped just 6 points on serve and did not face a break point. Baghdatis helped Murray along by playing lackluster tennis and failing to save a single break point to go 0-2 for the set.
The second set wasn’t quite as impressive from Murray. He stared down a pair of break points and faltered a few times on his second serve, but Baghdatis was no better in the second set than he was in the first and Murray was able to blow past him into the semifinals.
Bernard Tomic (8) def. Denis Istomin 6-3, 7-6(4)
Australian youngster Bernard Tomic seems to be coming into his own after an up-and-down season in 2011. The Aussie is currently ranked 42 in the world, but he’s playing at a much higher level than his ranking would suggest.
Tomic won just 4 more points than Istomin in the match, but the Aussie played the few big points better and was rewarded, first with a service break in the opening set and then the mini-break in the tiebreaker.
The win sends Tomic into an intriguing semifinal match with top seed Andy Murray.
