  • Dolgopolov, Simon into Brisbane semis

    1/5/12 4:26 PM | Cheryl Murray
Dolgopolov, Simon into Brisbane semis Alexandr Dolgopolov and Gilles Simon booked the first two slots in the Brisbane International semifinals with wins on Thursday.

Alexandr Dolgopolov def. Radek Stepanek 4-6, 6-3, 6-3

The Ukraine’s Alexandr Dolgopolov seems to be making a career of digging out from behind to win. Radek Stepanek of the Czech pocketed the first set and went up an immediate break in the second before Dolgopolov managed to find his footing.

There were plenty of entertaining shots in the first two sets. Dolgopolov managed to get a second service break midway through the second set to level the match at a set apiece.

Stepanek gave a valiant effort in the third set, but he sustained an injury that would not allow him to keep up with the Ukrainian, who will take on Gilles Simon in the semis.

Gilles Simon def. Santiago Giraldo 7-6(2), 6-4

World No. 12 Gilles Simon of France also came back from an early deficit to get his first-ever win over Colombia’s Santiago Giraldo. The Frenchman went down a break in the first set before he earned the break back to force a tiebreaker.

Simon drew first blood in the second set, but Giraldo was able to get a break back. Fortunately for the Frenchman, Giraldo gave up a second break to give Simon the win.
