The Ukraine's Alexandr Dolgopolov and Gilles Simon of France will look to book spots in the Brisbane semifinals.
Alexandr Dolgopolov (3) vs. Radek Stepanek (6)
The Ukraine’s Alexandr Dolgopolov will take on Czech veteran Radek Stepanek in the Brisbane quarterfinals. Their only other meeting came at this very tournament two years ago. Stepanek won that match in three tough sets, but that was a different, far less dangerous Dolgopolov.
Stepanek’s ranking sits at a healthy 28th in the world, with Dolgopolov occupying the No. 15 spot. Dolgopolov will be favored in this matchup due in part to his big first serve, but he’ll be facing a rare breed in Stepanek – he plays a serve-and-volley game.
Prediction – The slight edge to Dolgopolov, but expect Stepanek to make the Ukrainian work.
Gilles Simon (2) vs. Santiago Giraldo
It’s deja vu for Gilles Simon and Santiago Giraldo. The two men met a year ago in the first round at the Brisbane International. Giraldo came from out of nowhere to upset Simon in easy straight sets.
Simon had some good results in 2011. The Frenchman won titles in Sydney and Hamburg, but he failed to win a single match in his last three tournaments of the year.
Giraldo of Colombia had consistent results in 2011, with most of his good results coming in the very beginning of the season.
Giraldo may have his chances at another upset, but the Frenchman should pull out the win.
