  • Nadal cruises into Doha quarters, Tsonga also wins

    1/4/12 5:35 PM | Ricky Dimon
Nadal cruises into Doha quarters, Tsonga also wins Rafael Nadal dismissed Denis Gremelmayr in straight sets on Wednesday in Doha. Nadal is joined in the quarterfinals by Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who defeated Flavio Cipolla.

    (1) Rafael Nadal d. (Q) Denis Gremelmayr 6-2, 6-2

Nadal booked his spot in the quarterfinals of the Qatar ExxonMobil Open with a straight-set win over Gremelmayr on Wednesday evening. Gremelmayr actually played well and made for a host of entertaining rallies, but Nadal still lost only four games and advanced after one hour and 29 minutes.

The top-seeded Spaniard converted just four of 15 break points, but he made the most of his chances in the third and fifth games of set one. While Gremelmayr continued to fight in the second, he dropped his serve on two consecutive occasions--both of which went to multiple deuces--and fell behind 4-0. The 189th-ranked German held his last two service games, but Nadal closed it out with a love hold at 5-2.

    (3) Jo-Wilfried Tsonga d. Flavio Cipolla 7-6(8), 6-3

Tsonga played a third tiebreaker in two matches but he survived another tough test to beat Cipolla and reach the Doha quarterfinals on Wednesday. The Frenchman, who ousted Malek Jaziri in a three-set opener, advanced after one hour and 46 minutes of play. Tsonga overcame slow conditions, firing six aces and earning four breaks even though Cipolla served at 80 percent.

Cipolla led by a break in the first set, but Tsonga fought back and forced a tiebreaker. The 5'8'' Italian had two set points in the 'breaker only to see his opponent again dig out of a hole and take it 10 points to eight. From there it was mostly Tsonga the rest of the way, as the world No. 6 seized three breaks in the second. He finished it off with a break at 5-3, clinching victory at the end of a long rally with an overhead smash.
