Top seed Andy Murray came back again from a set deficit in Brisbane, this time to beat Gilles Muller.
Andy Murray (1) def. Gilles Muller 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-0
For all of the first set and much of the second, Andy Murray appeared to be headed for an early exit at the Brisbane International. The Scot found himself pitted against a decidedly on-form Gilles Muller of Luxembourg.
Muller soundly outplayed Murray in the opening set and even had two break point chances at 4-3 in the second to go up an early break. The world No. 4 was able to stave off both break points, though Muller still played well enough to force Murray to a tiebreaker.
Murray benefited from a handful of poorly timed unforced errors from Muller’s racket in the breaker which ultimately allowed the Scot to sneak out a 7-4 win and keep himself in the match.
Missing his chance to finish off Murray took its toll on Muller. The Luxembourgian barely showed up in the third set. Murray was able to win every game, with Muller taking just four points for the entire set.
Murray will take on Marcos Baghdatis in the quarterfinals.
Bernard Tomic (8) def. Tatsuma Ito 6-1, 6-2
Australian teenager Bernard Tomic made short work of Japan's Tatsuma Ito. In a match lasting just shy of 45 minutes, Tomic served up 10 aces and managed to break Ito five times before wrapping up the quick victory.
Tomic’s quarterfinal opponent will be Dennis Istomin from Uzbekistan.
