Stanislas Wawrinka spent his December training time in the alpine village of Gstaad and feels the better for it as the No. 17 begins play as defending champion at the ATP event in Chennai.
It's the fourth trip to India for the 26-year-old, whose major goal of the summer will be a title defence with Roger Federer as the pair try to duplicate their 2008 Beijing gold medal in doubles when they play the London Games.
"I can't wait to kick off the season after working hard during the off season," said Wawrinka, whose third career title came a year ago in Chennai when he beat Xavier Malisse for the trophy. "I love those events at the beginning of the year and hopefully I can do as well as last year or maybe even better."
Chennai is recovering form last week's monsoon rains which disrupted practise schedules. Wawrinka followed up his alpine training at altitude with more of the same down by Lake Geneva in his base of Lausanne. "My preparation was great, I feel like I'm ready and well prepared. The Chennai conditions suit my game, I've played some great matches here."
