1/3/12 2:56 PM | Cheryl Murray
After shaking off rust in the first set, world No. 4 Andy Murray gutted out a three-set win over Kazakhstan’s Mikhail Kukushkin.
For a while, this first round match between Andy Murray and Mikhail Kukushkin looked like the Brisbane International’s worst nightmare – their top seed and big name draw down 1-5 in his opening match to the world No. 94.
Credit must be given to Kukushkin, who was on fire for most of the opening set. The Kazakhstani took advantage of a slow-off-the-mark Murray, blasting winners and generally catching the Scot unawares.
Murray very nearly made his way back into the first set, but Kukushkin finally managed to serve out the set to take an improbable lead.
Kukushkin was not able to maintain his level of play in the second and third sets. Balls that were winners in the first set turned into errors, and Murray began to both serve and return better. The Scot certainly wasn’t at his very best, but he played well enough to grind out the win.
Murray will take on Gilles Muller of Luxembourg in the second round.
