Marcos Baghdatis and Australia’s own Bernard Tomic started their 2012 seasons with wins at the Brisbane International.
Bernard Tomic def. Julien Benneteau 6-2, 4-6, 7-5
Bernard Tomic won a thriller in front of the home crowd with a three-set victory over the French veteran Julien Benneteau. The young Australian dismantled Benneteau in the opening set, charging out to a 5-0 lead. Tomic was broken while serving to give Benneteau a bagel. The Frenchman held, but Tomic was back to business in his next service game and sealed the first set.
Benneteau served well in the second and outplayed the youngster to level the match at a set a piece, but most of the drama of the match came in the third set. Tomic went down an early break, but earned it back quickly. The Frenchman fought throughout the set to keep even with Tomic. Five times on match point, Benneteau played clutch tennis, but at deuce on the final game of the match, the veteran served up a double-fault, which gave Tomic the push he needed to close out the match.
Marcos Baghdatis def. Ryan Harrison 7-6(7), 6-4
American Ryan Harrison made Marcos Baghdatis work for his first round win. The Cypriot didn’t do himself any favors with a poor 44% first serve percentage, and Harrison served up 14 aces on the match.
Still, it was Baghdatis who showed up at the bigger moments. Baghdatis was able to lure Harrison into errors at crucial moments in the match. The first set was tightly contested, with no breaks of serve and a down-to-the-wire tiebreak as a decider.
The second set was a bit sloppier from both men, with Baghdatis squeezing out the extra break of serve that won the match for him. The Cypriot will take on Kei Nishikori in the second round.
