  • Troicki advances in Doha, Tursunov upset

    1/2/12 5:26 PM | Ricky Dimon
Troicki advances in Doha, Tursunov upset Viktor Troicki opens in Doha with a straight-set win over Lukas Rosol on Monday. Albert Ramos reaches round two by taking out Dmitry Tursunov.

    (5) Viktor Troicki d. Lukas Rosol 6-4, 7-6(4)

Troicki won 40 matches in 2011 and he is off to a good start in 2012 after dismissing Rosol in straight sets at the Qatar ExxonMobil Open on Monday. Both players struggled on second serve, but Troicki blasted 16 aces with just one double-fault and won 90 percent of his first-serve points.

One break was enough for Doha's fifth seed in the first set because he lost a mere four points in five service games. Rosol battled back nicely in the second, but he squandered a break lead then gave away a mini-break advantage in the tiebreaker. Troicki eventually took the 'breaker seven points to four, setting up a second-round clash against either Matthias Bachinger or Roberto Bautista-Agut.

    Albert Ramos d. Dmitry Tursunov 7-5, 6-2

Ramos maintained momentum from a breakout 2011 campaign and avenged a loss three months ago in Moscow by taking care of Tursunov in straight sets on Monday. Tursunov actually served well (72 percent, five aces, no double-faults), but he looked hopeless from the baseline and struggled to win first-serve return points and his own second-serve points.

The Russian led by a break early in the first set, but it was all Ramos the rest of the way. After getting back on serve, the 23-year-old Spaniard broke at 5-5 and never looked back. Ramos saved all three of the break points he faced in set two and he now awaits either Alex Bogomolov or Filippo Volandri.
