Newest Australian hope Bernard Tomic will take on tricky Frenchman Julien Benneteau in the Brisbane International first round.
Julien Benneteau vs. Bernard Tomic (8)
Australian teenager Bernard Tomic made his big career breakthrough at Wimbledon last year, with a quarterfinals showing. Despite his success, the youngster has still lost more professional matches than he’s won. His career record currently stands at 21-24.
Tomic’s opponent is the veteran Frenchman Julien Benneteau, who sits 10 spots behing Tomic’s ranking at No. 52 in the world. Benneteau keeps his ranking up largely on the strength of some excellent Challenger results, but he’s had shaky results on the main tour.
Prediction – expect Tomic to come through this one.
Marcos Baghdatis vs. Ryan Harrison
Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis, former Australian Open finalist, will take on American newcomer Ryan Harrison for a chance to move into the Brisbane second round.
Harrison’s 2011 results were a mixed bag, with a good showing on the North American hard courts, but struggles most everywhere else.
Baghdatis has similarly patchy results last year, with his pick-up coming at the end of the season.
The Cypriot is ranked much higher at No. 44 in the world, while Harrison sits at No. 79, but the American fares well on hard courts and he’ll at least have the chance to make Baghdatis work for the second round.
Prediction – Baghdatis in 3.
