As he begins a 2012 season just three weeks after he ended 2011, Rafael Nadal has again made a repeat call for some rationality in the crowded tennis schedule.
The Spaniard is calling for the Davis Cup to become a bi-annual affair after more than a century of being played every year.
With the London Olympics this summer, the demands on ATP and players are even more than usual. Nadal has made his point again that the Davis Cup should change with the times.
"I told them (the IFT) 'We're committing suicide,'" Nadal told El Pais newspaper. "It's the truth, and I'm not saying that for my personal good. The reality is that things are bad and are not favouring a special competition.
"There are no efforts to improve it and I don't understand why. It's not just a matter of money. Why not make a Davis (Cup) that lasts two years? Two ties the first year, two the second.
"Because there is no interest in doing it financially. A competition, when it's so many years in a row, loses a tad of value. If you do not compete with the best (players), it loses value. That's what the ITF is promoting, and does not realise it."
Nadal, who led Spain this month to a fifth Davis trophy since 2000 has all but ruled himself out of the 2012 campaign due to demands of to many events and the extra load of competing at the Olympics. But nothing is yet finalised with the possibility remaining open that the No. 2 might re-join Spain in the later stages of the competition.

And that's why Rafa announces that he's going to rest his shoulder in Feb, so that he'll be excused from DC duties. With Ferrer and Feli excusing themselves, Rafa may be pressurized to play in Feb, so he's taking premptive measures now to protect himself.

One day... when players have a real represetative in ATP and ITF, that will be possible and the voice of players will be heard.
Till that day... :(
