Lleyton Hewitt is starting on the back foot at his seventh appearance for Australia at the Hopman Cup mixed teams event, with the local hero admitting that he's still not at 100 percent due to a tie injury which required spring surgery.
The No. 186 got an invite to the Hopman in Perth but needed wild cards to make entries at Sydney and the Australian Open. Hewitt, aged 30, says he's still content to fight on in the game. "I'm probably more motivated now than even a couple of years ago really," said the two-time Grand Slam winner who will anchor host Australia at the eight-nation event along with first-time partner Jarmila Gajdasova.
"Right at the moment the rest of my body feels unbelievable," said Hewitt, who last played as Australia lost a Davis Cup semi-final to Switzerland in Sydney last September,
"It's just been this niggling foot injury. If I can get over that then I'm 100 percent totally and fully committed to doing all the right things. Hopefully that's just around the corner.
"I'm just battling through it, doing all the right things and hopefully I can get out there and play as pain-free as possible. You go out there and hopefully do the job, he said while admitting to "a little bit of pain here and there.
"But it's been a while since I've been injury-free and pain-free. It's a matter of just being mentally tough out there and not worrying about it and going out there and getting as close to 100 percent as possible."
