Richard Gasquet hopes to begin lifting his game back to its potential as he starts 2012 at the Hopman Cup teams event in Perth, combining with compatriot Marion Bartoli on court.
The No. 19 is keen to get back on track after once reaching seventh in the world before a shoulder injury and false charges of cocaine use derailed his career several seasons ago.
The one-time prodigy has always been tipped for greatness in France. He will be playing Perth for the first time, with France opening the round-robin event on New Year's Eve against China, which boasts French Open champion Li Na and untested Wu Dix, ranked 421st.
"I've never played here (Perth), it's good to practise, it's good to prepare and to get ready for Melbourne," Gasquet told local media. "I played a lot in Brisbane (the ATP event the same week), I wanted to change it a bit."
Gasquet stands more than 400 spots higher than Wu and should be counted on taking a point for France. The Frenchman said that his goal is to return to a place in the tennis elite. "I'm trying to break into the top 10, I did it some years ago and I'm not far."
