Rafael Nadal has posted his intention of boarding a place for Abu Dhabi, with the No. 2 telling his Facebook page: "Practicing with Agustin Boje, Andoni Vivanco and Alex Andino at Manacor! Ready for Abu Dhabi, let's get started!"
The hometown training sessions in Manacor on the island of Mallorca seem to have restored confidence for the Spaniard, who will cross paths with main rivals Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic in the Gulf for a three-day exhibition which pays comfortable guarantees and hands the winner a quarter of a million dollars.
Nadal has hopefully snuffed out speculation that his 2011 shoulder injury is still a bother which had led to speculation that he might not play before the Australian Open.
But in an interview with Spanish sports paper AS, uncle and coach Toni Nadal said the trip to the Gulf for the event which ends on New Year's Eve is a go.
"There was something in his left shoulder," said Toni. "He felt it just before going to London. In Sevilla (Davis Cup final) Rafael's shoulder was fine. But he had to play Saturday and Sunday so I think he had some tendinitis of the patella (bone). But it is not an issue now."
Nadal said that he and his nephew had worked during the brief off-season. "We didn't work on hitting or specific aspects of the game. We worked with the intention of recovering the intensity in the game - the key is to play well."
