Toni Nadal tells Spanish papers that there is hope yet for nephew Rafael Nadal to help Spain defend its Davis Cup title in 2012.
Alex Corretja has been handed a two-year contract to serve as captain of Spain's Davis Cup team after holiday negotiations with federation officials.
The 1998 French Open finalist who replaces his own former ATP rival Albert Costa, will have to make due next season, with the likelihood that Rafael Nadal will skip Davis Cup and not crowd an Olympic year which already has a full calendar.
But even that situation appears to be fluid, if Toni Nadal is to be believed.
The uncle and coach of the world No. 2 told Spanish newspaper AS that nothing is definite about Davis Cup in 2012.
"There has not been a total refusal by Rafael. The only certainty is that in principle that the 2012 schedule very tight, there are more tournaments," said the senior Nadal. "There are different scenarios for the Olympics. we will see later (about Davis Cup) depending on how everything goes."
Corretja called his appointment "an honour and a huge responsibility." The Spaniard, who once stood second in the world, will start with a tie in February against Kazakhstan in Oviedo.
