  • Gilbert to pick up a racquet in Adelaide exho

    12/27/11 7:17 PM | Johan Lindahl
Gilbert to pick up a racquet in Adelaide exho Former Andy Murray coach Brad Gilbert will get the chance to show he's not just all talk as he picks up a racquet next month in Adelaide as part of an exhibition event featuring players from past and present generations.

The January 10-12 World Tennis Challenge will also feature John McEnroe, Patrick Rafter and Henri Leconte among the old boys. Current players are Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov, Frenchman Michael Llodra, Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka and James Blake.

Gilbert, a sport statistic freak and noted motormouth, currently advises Japan's Kei Nishikori after once coaching Murray as well as Andre Agassi and Andy Roddick.

"I said `sure' then I was told who was playing. These guys like (John) McEnroe and (Henri) Leconte play a lot," Gilbert told Australian media. "Especially Mac who is playing unbelievably well for his age (52).

"I have a hit of doubles every once in a while but I haven't played a singles match since I retired. So, hopefully, I can hit a few balls straight and get ready in the next few weeks."

California-based Gilbert will compete in Adelaide before heading to the Australian Open the following week for American television duties.
