Alex Corretja may be the only viable candidate for the position as Spanish Davis Cup captain, but that still doesn't mean that the Former French Open finalist's contract is a done deal.
There seems to be disagreement between the federation and the player, who wants a two-year pact while being offered a one-year deal so far. Barcelona-based Corrteja says that with few of the major Spaniards bothering with Davis Cup in the 2012 Olympic year, next season will hardly be typical of what he could accomplish were to have the likes of Rafael Nadal, David Ferrer and Feliciano Lopez on hand.
Albert Costa quit the captain post after three years and two titles and was promptly moved upstairs to oversee all Spanish teams. Corretja, 37, Costa's career rival, emerged when 1998 Paris winner Carlos Moya declined to be interviewed for the job.
If Corretja and Madrid tennis bosses can come to terms, his first test will come in February's Davis Cup first round against Kazakhstan in Oviedo, with a team likely lead by No. 10 Nicolas Almagro and doubles player Marcel Granollers.
