Former Australian great John Newcombe remains unconvinced by Novak Djokovic's vow to resume his world-beating ways during the 2012 season.
The seven-time Grand Slam champion said that it will be a huge ask for the winner of ten titles in 2011 do reach a level like that again, especially considering his injury and fatigue fade from September onwards.
"He's just won so many matches, and it's been pretty obvious, even at the US Open, he was struggling," the local icon told Australian media. "Since the US Open, there's been injuries; a sore shoulder, a sore back.
"When you watch him playing, he's running on three cylinders. I'd say that his body has temporarily given in. It's not a lot of time to suddenly suck it up and start the year again and defend everything that he won last year.
"I think it will be a superhuman effort for him to repeat the six months that he had. It was an amazing run, and that is very hard to defend."
Djokovic will have a chance to start erasing Newcombe's doubts next week as he plays the Abu Dhabi exhibition along with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

Well he may not defend all his titles but he may defend some. He may win the slam(s) and retain his no.1 ranking; it all depends on his confidence level and whether his body can hold up. Competition is getting stiffer next year, with the top four plus Delpo. Also Tsonga and Berdych may make their moves too and try to win a slam. I do not expect anyone to dominate like Nole did in 2011. In fact I don't think competition in the past, from 2004 to 2011, were as stiff as 2012 would be (if those seven guys mentioned are all fit and healthy and playing at their best).
