Novak Djokovic is nothing if not early, with the Serb already in place well over a week before the start of his first engagement of the new tennis season, the well-paid Mubadala World Tennis Championship exhibition.
The 2011 No. 1, who stormed through the first nine months of the campaign winning ten titles before fading away with injury and fatigue in the closing stages, is getting in pre-Christmas training time in the Gulf.
Djokovic will be joined in the field by Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, David Ferrer and the Frenchmen Gael Monfils and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
Djokovic admitted that he managed just a fortnight off the court after losing in the group stage at the year-end final dominated by Federer in London. The 24-year-old Serb took a break in the Maldives before landing in Abu Dhabi.
His routine nearly matches that of Federer, who has a training base in the nearby emirate of Dubai where he has also been working on his game in the brief off-season.
Djokovic said upon arrival that he's confident his run of form can stretch into 2012, even though rivals, Federer, Nadal and Andy Murray are all chasing him. "It's great to be in Abu Dhabi for the first time," he said. "With the sun out and first class facilities, it already seems like an ideal way to kick off my season.
"I'm preparing my defence of the Australian Open, which is only weeks away. The best preparation is winning matches. There will be some real battles out on centre court and I'm going to give the fans what they want - some attacking tennis."
Djokovic opens on December 29 against Gael Monfils, with the winner to face Federer.
