  • Rosewall worries about Hewitt shelf-life

    12/19/11 8:04 PM | Johan Lindahl
Rosewall worries about Hewitt shelf-life Australian eight-time Grand Slam champion Ken Rosewall is worried about the state of Lleyton Hewitt, with the tennis legend convinced that yet another injury setback could be all it takes for the 30-year-old to hang up on his career.

Hewitt, who stood No. 1 as a teenager and won both Wimbledon and US Open titles, has been plagued by physical problems for the last several seasons, including two bouts of hip surgery, and a foot injury which has persisted for months and compromised his abbreviated 2011 season.

Hewitt, who turns 31 in February, is currently tuning up for another go at the Australian Open from January 16, but is ranked 186th and will need a wild card to gain entry into his home Grand Slam. "If he does get too many other serious niggling injuries, I'd imagine he'd have to give it a miss," Rosewall told the Canberra Times. "He's been unlucky that he has come up with these injuries."

The former great suggested that Hewitt's hard-hitting scrambler style on court may have contributed to the winding down of his shelf life. "The way he's played so much on hard courts, whether that has had any bearing, there's always a question mark about that.

"Lleyton's the kind of player who would like to continue playing but if he has any number of bad losses, in his own mind, he's going to figure it out that it's not doing him much good."

Hewitt again skipped the autumn season, last playing in Australia's September Davis Cup loss in Sydney to Switzerland.
