Players will have to show respect in more ways than one when they face off in 2012 with Mikhail Youzhny after the Russian earned his PhD degree in philosophy from the University of Moscow, graduating during the brief ATP off-season.
In a sport where high school graduates are not even the norm, Youzhny will certainly stand out in the academic sweepstakes. After picking up his diploma, the 29-year-old currently ranked 35th, headed off to his usual training grounds of Thailand in preparation for the January Australian tournaments.
"I was a bit nervous because it was something new, it’s not like a tennis match I’m going to play, which I do every week," Youzhny told the ATP as he described his oral examination. "I was answering questions and reasoning, so of course it’s different.
"But actually, when I think about what I said, it’s my life, what I’m doing every day on court."
Youzhny began studying in 2005, fitting it in between his on-court duties. "I didn’t mind if it took five, six, seven or eight years. I feel good because I took the time to do what I wanted to do, I finished it, and I’m happy with that."
Youzhny - just call him "Dr." - will start his ATP year in Qatar the first week of January.
