Croatian tennis can't seem to afford the services of Goran Ivanisevic. Officials in the Balkan country have declined an offer from the 2001 Wimbledon winner and national sporting idol to take over as coach of the Davis Cup squad.
The problems is price, with the federation apparently unwilling to pay $130,000 per annum for the services of the country's best-known former player and cultural hero.
It's been a wild ride recently in Croatian tennis after the abrupt November retirement of Davis Cup and Fed Cup coach Goran Prpic, a player in the Ivanisevic era.
The country, which won the Davis Cup in 2005 through Ivan Ljubicic, was left high and dry when Prpic handed in his resignation from both jobs without spelling out too many reasons. He ran the show for men for four years and had been with the women for a decade.
Ivanisevic was prepared to step in before the money issue arose. Croatia face a Davis Cup World Group first round against Japan February 10-12. Iva Majoli, the 1997 French Open champion, was chosen to take up the Fed Cup job.
In Buenos Aires, Martin Jaite has taken over from Tito Vazquez, whose side lost the final this month to Spain 3-1. Jaite, who once reached the ATP Top 10, will be assisted by Mariano Zabaleta on the squad.
