Tim Henman weighs in on Roger Federer's impressive year-ending sweep.
Tim Henman has long rated Roger Federer as a good friend. So it's no surprise that the retired former British No. 1 calls the Swiss player's march through the field at the year-end championships in London one of the highlight of the tennis year.
The finals win over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga propelled Federer to a third straight title of the season, a perfect way to wrap up 2011 and become the talking point for the Australian Open.
"I've always been a Federer fan because I love the way he plays, and while he's lost a few matches out there this year, he deserved to win in London," Henman told the ATP Champions Tour website.
"It's amazing that people were trying to write him off. For Roger to play the way that he did in London and go beyond both Pete Sampras and Ivan Lendl in terms of year-ending championship victories, that was incredible."
The 37-year-old Henman, who retired in 2007 with four Wimbledon semi-finals, added that
he tips the Swiss to also close the gap on Pete Sampras and set the record for most weeks in the No. 1 position.
"With a rolling ranking it will be interesting to see if (No. 3) Federer can get back to No. 1. He is just short of Sampras' record for most weeks at No. 1 (Federer stands on 285 weeks).
"I know Roger will really want to break that record, so I think it's possible. I think he will win more Slams, I really do. If the conditions favour him then Roger at his best is still better than anyone else."
