Novak Djokovic may have had little to offer after winning the US Open, with injuries and general fatigue calling a halt to his storming 2011 progress.
But the Serb, who lifted 10 titles and won three of the four Grand Slam crowns, came up big in the prize money stakes, setting an earnings record which could well be the envy of rivals Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.
The world No. 1 has set the new standard of $12.6 million in prize payouts alone, that figure at least quadrupled by other income and bonuses from sponsors.
The previous annual record was held by Rafael Nadal, who lifted $10.1 million during a superlative 2010 campaign. Roger Federer ended this season at a run, taking titles at his last three events including 1.6 million at the World Tour Finals in London.
The Swiss leads the all-time money list with $67.4 million, which includes the somewhat modest $6.3 million from 2011. Nadal stands second in the career cash chase on $45 million ($7.6 million earned in 2011) while former great Pete Sampras is third on $43.2 million.
Djokovic, Federer and Nadal will have a chance to pocket some spare change as a coda to 2011 at the Abu Dhabi exho from December 29-31, where guarantees total in the millions for the top trio in the world.
