  • Insensitive drug testers draw fire in Spain

    12/5/11 2:28 PM | Johan Lindahl
Insensitive drug testers draw fire in Spain Davis Cup players were less than impressed as international drug testers swooped on the squad in the middle of weekend Davis Cup doubles play.

They hauled off Spain's Rafael Nadal and Argentine Juan Martin Del Potro from the bench for tests as their teams battled on court.

Both sides were deprived of a main protagonist, with criticism of insensitivity and poor timing in Seville at the Davis Cup final. Also getting the same treatment, Spain's David Ferrer and Argentine David Nalbandian.

It was the second shock of the week for Del Potro, who was shaken awake at mid-week by the drugs police and subjected to testing. Samples were collected from all four players who contested Friday's day one singles; Nadal and David Ferrer of Spain and Argentina's Del Potro and Juan Monaco.

Spain's Fernando Verdasco, on court in the doubles tie, complained mightily. "They were subject to the tests during the match. We have talked about this a lot. We have said that we are happy with the tests and controls so that there is clean sport because nobody wants to play against a doped player, but there are different ways of doing things."

The Spaniard got his own "reward," as he and teammate Feliciano Lopez were taken away for their own tests after losing the doubles rubber. "I don't think it's nice that during a game they take the colleagues out to go to a test," he said. "That's in my opinion.

"They could wait until the end of the match, and they could have allowed them to cheer us and then do the test afterwards, which is what we are going to do now. I think they are going a little bit over the top."

I suppose the idea was to test within 24 hours of both singles matches, but it can't be necessary to pull these guys away from a match to test. Regardless, I'm pretty sure there's nothing that's going to please the likes of Yannick Noah and other mental midgets like him.

Its no use in testing the, durin an event. They should do the testing in the ofseason when the training is due. If Rafaie feels like waking up for training with the current lack of passion and motivation.

Isn't it interesting that scoretracker hasn't commented on this article after going on and on like a trumpet about the poor Argentines being woken up but NOT the Spaniards.

Sienna, how does it feel to be consumed by bitterness?

Oh my God jean, are you accusing scoretracker of impartiality? I don't think he will take kindly to that..................
