David Nalbandian is in line to play the fifth rubber of the Davis Cup final, but he needs a Juan Martin Del Potro victory to kick off Sunday's action. If Del Potro wins, Nalbandian will battle David Ferrer for the title.
David Nalbandian has made no secret about the importance of Davis Cup in the latter stages of his career. He could have a chance to play for the title on Sunday.
First, though, Argentine teammate Juan Martin Del Potro would have to stun Rafael Nadal in order to set up a decisive fifth rubber between Nalbandian and David Ferrer. That's because Spain leads the final tie 2-1 heading into the last day of action.
Nalbandian and Ferrer have faced each other on 12 previous occasions, with Ferrer leading the head-to-head series 7-5. All four of their clay-court encounters have gone in Ferrer's favor. Their most recent clash came in the Auckland final earlier this season, which resulted in a 6-3, 6-2 Ferrer rout.
Both men are 1-0 in this Davis Cup final, albeit in much different fashion. Nalbandian sat out the opening day of singles as Juan Monaco got pasted by Nadal in straight sets. The veteran Argentine took the court in Saturday's doubles rubber and teamed up with Eduardo Schwank to destroy Fernando Verdasco and Feliciano Lopez.
Ferrer gave Spain a 2-0 lead on Friday after outlasting Juan Martin Del Potro 6-2, 6-7(2), 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 in an absolute thriller. The Spaniard needed four hours and 46 minutes to subdue an incredibly game opponent.
Assuming Ferrer is not too tired, he has the edge in every department in this one. Nalbandian would need a borderline miracle on clay and on the road in Spain; but of course it would also take a miracle simply for the tie to reach this point.
