  • Argentines out of luck on court and off in Spain

    12/3/11 3:00 PM | Johan Lindahl
Argentines out of luck on court and off in Spain There's been no luck at all for Argentines on court and off during the Davis Cup final in Seville, with circumstances seeming to work against the South American visitors.

Not only did rain seeping through the roof of an aging and unused Olympic stadium facility prevent the visitors from an opening-day warmup on the clay, but Argentine fans also got the bum's rush from Spanish officials. A group of ticketed Argentines were arbitrarily moved from their seats to make room for Spaniards, with the South Americans relegated rows above their original positions.

Argentine players were also awoken at 6:30 a.m. at mid-week for a doping control on their only day off.

The Spanish football stadium facility now hastily adapted for tennis offered some of the worst tickets ever seen in the sport with distances from the court as far away as the "nosebleed" seats at the other mammoth tennis white elephant, the US Open Ashe court.

Spanish official were quick to sell 6,000 "limited visibility" seats, which allowed them to boast of a world record daily attendance of 27,500. But those who paid prices ranging from 75 to 150 euros were hardly impressed with what they got - or didn't get - for their money.

Even those well away from the cheap seats had reason to complain as they sat in a greasy "sauna" of burger-frying smoke drifting down from mass-market kitchens below the stands into the 400-euro seats.

M. Lopez should have been one of the doubles players.

nadline , 12/3/11 4:44 PM

Argies take first set, 6-4.

nadline , 12/3/11 4:51 PM

Costa made a mistake in bringing on Verdasco.................looks like Rafa will have to win it for Spain tomorrow......

Verdasco has been off the rails for a while now...................

Should have played Marc Lopez.......

rafaisthebest , 12/3/11 5:09 PM

Yea, I think it will be down to Rafa tomorrow.

nadline , 12/3/11 5:21 PM

Argies might put Nalbandian in against Rafa tomorrow.

nadline , 12/3/11 5:26 PM

Nalby is good, but he's not that good. I doubt very much he could keep pace with either Rafa or David in best of 5.

Maya , 12/3/11 7:22 PM

rafa will win it for them tomorrow,
such a advantage to know that 2 points are already in the bag with rafa playing on clay.
The rest just need 1 win out of 3 matches which Ferrer has already provided

atul1985 , 12/3/11 7:22 PM

DelPo was pretty tired after Friday. Might not be a bad idea to play Nalby.

cherylmurray , 12/3/11 7:54 PM

The vibe is that Delpo will play Rafa and Nalby will play Ferrer because Monaco is a bit shaken up after his encounter with Rafa.........he's got a sore wrist.

nadline , 12/3/11 8:40 PM

@Cheryl Murray, 7:54pm, yes Delpo was very tired and I have to wonder whether that had anything to do with the drug testing at the ungodly hour of 6:30 am, plus jet lag and his lingering injuries.

BTW, did you know that the drug testing people woke up the Argie team at 6:30 am to do testing? The whole Argie team was angry that their sleep was disturbed at such a ridiculous hour in the am. Was that gamesmanship or what? I have to ask why wasn't the same done for the Spanish team? I think that action is highly suspicious and have to wonder if it was deliberate to give Spain an edge. vs. Argentina.

If we're to look at the big picture, I don't think Argentina is any match for Spain due to Nalby's injuries and not being able to play for most of the year which makes him a bad choice to play any rubber. Then there's Delpo who is suffering from wrist and hip problems, which have caused him to skip tournaments and kept him from his fitness regimen. I know many mentioned Delpo's fitness being a huge problem, but there's a reason for that, and it's due to his injuries which have made him very rusty. fitness is cumulative and stop and start is not good for any athlete. This is what JMDP has had to deal with from 2009, and that would make any athlete come up short in the fitness department.

Lest we not forget Nadal's results at the WTF, I won't take his performance against Monaco as a guage that he'll beat any of the top 4 at the AO, coz Monaco is not even top 10 or even against some of top 20 caliber. In other words, the beatdown he got from Nadal is something he would have gotten if he had played say Isner or Youzhny. I'm not trying to discredit Nadal's performance, but it's a fact that a top player can look imperious against a player of much lower caliber in one round, then get a perfect beatdown when he meets one of his peers or someone ranked lower with a good all-court game later. I sincerely hope that Nadal's wins in DC can give him the propulsion fuel to make a good performance at the AO, but considering what happened at the WTF, and his losses to Murray, djokovic and Fed, I think it's questionable as to how he'll perform come the AO. I suppose we'll know when the AO is over.

scoretracker , 12/4/11 2:34 AM

Scoretracker, you are really a whiner. Every post of yours complains about everything to do with Spain and Nadal fans or threatening to complaining to moderators by asking for their email, as if anyone cares. I don't see you complaining when Muzz gets woken up at ungodly hours - oh wait he wasn't playing a Spainiard so it doesn't count!! I've never once seen you pull up a Fed fan for out-of-line comments but instead, your cheerleeding for the likes of Sienna and Solitudine and their ridiculous rants explain a lot! Quit whining will you? It's gertting very boring and tiresome!!!! Same old same old same old same old.....

jean , 12/4/11 4:40 AM

I have a right to air my views just like everyone else, and I very seldom talk about Nadal and Spain. Your exaggeration is so over the top, and I'd like for you to show me all those posts complaining about Nadal, Spain and calling for the moderators. Get this straight, i have never sent an email to complain about anyone here, unlike the Nadal fans who do that en masse, and I suppose you're about the very top of the list. I believe you've confused me with the nadal fans who threaten Fed fans about being banned if they dare open their mouths, coz they know that an email will be sent to that effect. FYI, I don't 'always' call for the moderators ... I asked for that just one time, a few days ago, and that would show any sensible person that i don't email to them. Talk to the Nadal fans who do that and read carefully before spouting your garbage. BTW, I don't see you pulling up anyone except Fed fans for their comments. You pick on everyone else except for Muzz and Nadal fans. And, I wish for once you'd write something about tennis instead of the usual same old same old tearing down of Fed fans, with your usage of the most obscene language, for which you are thanked, and applauded. Plz get a life and start talking some tennis.

scoretracker , 12/4/11 6:18 AM

You were banned for sending 4 e-mails to Cherry in one day....
Are you really so sick or lost... that you don't know anymore what are you talking... or you are just another ordinary liar....LOL...
You dare to say to someone..." Go get a life"... you...?
You are posting on 20 sites... ( ...and ppl like your posts there...LOL)...
Geeeeeez.... now I am going to clean my keyboard... it is dirty after typing answer to you...

zare , 12/4/11 9:13 AM

So I see it is scoretracker who is getting pummled because he has got the nerve to post comments.

So sickening to see no action is taken against thos posters. Completely out of order and actually enforced by the moderator(s).

Sienna , 12/4/11 11:05 AM

Who did the testing, scoretracker, ITF or Spanish Federation?

Facts, please..................not speculation.

Thanks

rafaisthebest , 12/4/11 12:02 PM

Fedfans have nothing better to do than talk about Rafa, without Rafa their lives would be so dull. The first thing they think about when they wake up is Rafa; they eat, drink and sleep Rafael Nadal.

This is not surprising because Rafa is the biggest saviour tennis has ever had, he woke people up from the slumber of domination by one player.

nadline , 12/4/11 12:26 PM

lol, zare knows my email provider more than I do. Is that the news you heard that I sent 4 emails to Cheryl in one day. pray tell me which day that was and I'll check with my email carrier. You people are so funny that it's pathetic. now my keyboard is dirty.

scoretracker , 12/4/11 2:26 PM

@Ms. murray, could you please inform zare that I didn't send you 4 emails in one day. BTW, from where are these people getting such distorted information? I'd like for you to set things straight and not allow this nonsense to happen repeatedlycoz it doesn't bode well for anyone, especially me.

scoretracker , 12/4/11 2:31 PM

@nadline, aren't you the one who's always talking about Federer? Is this a pot calling the kettle situation? I'm sure it's obvious to everyone that you can't post anything without headlining Federer. Just take a look at the other thread you posted on and you'll see who brings Fed into these threads.

scoretracker , 12/4/11 3:09 PM

"I have to ask why wasn't the same done for the Spanish team? "

@jean - actually, it was. If you check the news, you will find that, IINM, both Rafa and Ferru, as well as DelPo, were disturbed during the doubles for testing.

Also, how, hearing how the Argentinian fans were treated, I feel a little bit better about my schedule not having permitted me to be able to go. Goodness.

mara002 , 12/5/11 12:07 AM

Mara002 - I would take Lindahls take on this article with a grain of salt. I watched all the matches on Tennis channel and Argentina was placed center, top to bottom and their were a load of Argentinian fans. If I didn't know they were in Spain, I might have thought they were in Argentina. Lindahl is hugely biased against anything Spanish. I actually laughed when I read this article.

Maya , 12/5/11 3:44 AM

mara002, 12/5/11 12:07 AM

Mara002, please get the usernames correct. You want to be addressing soretrasher and not me. I'm not dumb enough to ask stupid questions like that because I know who conduct the testing.

Lol Zare!
