  • Federer tips Nadal to lead Spain to Davis Cup title

    12/2/11 3:39 PM | Johan Lindahl
Federer tips Nadal to lead Spain to Davis Cup title Roger Federer believes the Nadal Factor will determine the Davis Cup finals outcome this weekend in Seville as the Spanish team takes on Argentina.

And despite his longtime rival appearing to be somewhat tapped out after a long season and London year-end disappointment, Federer believes the world No. 2 will rise to the winning occasion at home on clay.

“I’m sure it’s an open match in some ways but I think Spain are really the overwhelming favourite," said the Swiss, who must still decide if he is to front his nation at home in the 2012 first round against the US in February.

"Spain are playing at home and they have an incredibly solid team. The Argentines have their players and their team and anything is possible, but obviously it’s normal to favour the Spaniards with Rafa on the team, back on clay.”

Nadal has said in recent days that time on the clay has rekindled his tennis fire, with the six-time French Open winner expected to lead compatriot David Ferrer and the doubles pairing of Feliciano Lopez and Fernando Verdasco.

Nadal and Ferrer will want to get the weekend done as efficiently as possible to rest and train for the next three weeks before beginning the next season at a high-paying Abu Dhabi exhibition starting December 29.

Roger knows!!! To bad some of his fans aren't equally as clever.

These nasty digs are so unnecessary and uncalled for, considering not one Fed fan has posted on this thread at the time of that comment. However, I think it's expected considering the source, where it's obvious that bitterness and hate is the prevailing emotion. I wonder what would happen if all Fed fans were to exit this site, then who would the Nadal fans have to vilify? I suppose the joy would be lost for many.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize that Nadal and Spain are playing against players who are ranked very low. Spain's team comprises of one top four and a top 5 player. The only chink in their armour is the doubles team, so why wouldn't Roger pick Nadal to lead Spain to the win? I'm not sure he would so the same if it were Serbia playing against Spain, then he might pick Novak, as he would most likely dismantle Nadal and Spain.

Maya,

Fed is a class act. Also, he happens to like and respect Rafa. He has had enough tough losses to him to understand what a fierce competitor he is and would never make the mistake of underestimating him.

Scoretracker - Have you not heard the name Juan Martin DelPotro, or for that matter David Nalbandian? It doesn't matter where these guys are ranked they are top notch players and on any given day could beat anyone. If you spent a little more time actually reading about players other than Roger once in awhile, or pontificating on TT you would know that. My post wasn't a dig, it was a fact.

Native - Indeed. Fed is a class act.
