  • Federer would be happy to end the season best-of-5

    12/1/11 7:07 PM | Johan Lindahl
Federer would be happy to end the season best-of-5 Roger Federer may be among the few top tennis players ready to increase his workload on the ATP, with the Swiss calling - at the moment in vain - for a five-set final to wrap up the season at the World Tour Finals.

The 16-time Grand Slam winner was happy enough to go through in three sets at the weekend over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in London, earning $1.6 million for his undefeated effort. The best-of-three final did crack the two-hour mark to give a sellout crowd value for money.

But the Swiss would be pleased to go the distance anytime. He seems to be the only one among the top players to hold the opinion, casting the lone vote in favour when the matter was once up for discussion.

"I think a match of this importance should be over five sets," said Federer. "I think it makes for a great year-end.

"Back in 2007 I remember sitting in a room in Shanghai where players were asked, 'Would you like the year-end final to be five sets or three sets.' It kind of went in a circle. Everyone said best-of-three sets. I was the only guy that said, 'I think we should have best-of-five sets.'"

While the Tsonga final stretched long, it could have been over in less than 90 minutes had Federer served out the second set. "It would have been over in a hurry. I think I almost felt the spectators weren't quite ready for it to end.

"Maybe it's healthier to play best-of-three sets. But maybe the year-end could be a best-of-five set match. I do believe that."

That's something coming from a 30 year old!

newfangkc , 12/2/11 10:28 AM

I think it should be best of 5 as well. Even the Master 1000 finals should be 5 setters. IMO, it differentiates these tournaments and makes them more prestigious.

cable , 12/4/11 1:04 PM

If it were best of 5 as in pre-2006, then I doubt that quite a few players would not have won so many MS shields. The three-setters makes the MS and WTF to be a souped up version of the 500 tournaments. Consequently, I don't think 1,000 points should be awarded for MS tournaments. Also, WTF, should be at least 5 sets in the finals.

scoretracker , 12/5/11 2:06 AM

Blah blah blah,
Fact: Federer's 5th set record is piss poor,
He's not even in the top 100!

Sosueme , 12/5/11 3:28 AM

How many 5 set matches has Roger actually won against the top players in GS?He has a losing record..

2007 Wimby - won against Rafa
2008 Wimby - lost to Rafa
2009 AO - Lost to Rafa
2009 FO - Won against DElpo
2009 Wimby - wn against Roddick
2009 USO - Lost to Delpo
2010 USO - Lost to Djoko
2011 - Lost to Djoko

Yes he did beat the Fellas, Simon etc in GS best of 5..but I dont think that counts..

and these are GS where players give their best.. If Roger has a poor 5 set record in slams, how better would he fare in other tourneys (Masters, WTF)

If it was best of 5 as in pre 2006 , few players would not have won as many masters shields..haha..again know whom you hinting at..grapes are sour..The person you hinting at has one of the best 5 set records :-)

sanju , 12/5/11 5:11 AM

I actually think Roger's got a very good point here. To give the title the prestige it should have that the least they can do.

Coming from someone who has just won the title under the present format, he is not saying this for his own benefit, obviously.

nadline , 12/5/11 7:39 AM

Ignorant is bless I believe is the saying?

My god they are looking at a players 5th set record in order to estimate how he will fair in 5 set matches? LOL

Roger is maybe the best 5 set matchplayer the game has ever had. His slam record from 2003 til till now cannot be repeated by anyman alive.
Dont you guys understand anything about 5 set matches?

I will explaine it in the most simplistic way even Sosueme understands.
Fed has played Murray in 2 5 set match finals. He has won bothof those finals 3 sets to 0 sets.
So his 5 setmatch record against Murray is 2-0 Whenever they meat the next time in a final and Fed will lose in the fifth set then it is still 2-1 in 5sets match up finals. Please do not be so ignorant.

ANd if the masters where still played in final as 5 sets matches then it would have been impossible for Djokovic to win 5 1000 series.

Sienna , 12/5/11 8:18 AM

When the meEt again Murray will be eaten alive for the fresh meAt he actually is.

Sienna , 12/5/11 9:13 AM

Sienna, I think sanju doesn't understand the difference between 5 set matches and best of 5 set matches.

bleck , 12/5/11 9:57 AM

Roger recognizes that the WTF cannot be compared to the DC or a slam, that's why he is calling for best of 5.

nadline , 12/5/11 10:20 AM

What a great idea for the fans
I was at the WTF last month and the tickets are so expensive and hard to come by - expecially for night matches it was dissapoiting to pay over 65 gbp for a day ticket to watch just 2 sets of doubles followed by 2 sets of single -- 3 sets if you were lucky !!!
It should be the BEST of FIVE for the end of year championships
The Davis Cup is played out with best of 5 along with all 4 grand slams
Give the paying fans their moneys worth with 5 possible sets per match

sals3 , 12/5/11 10:50 AM

The O2 would not be the place for best of 5 sets as they've only got the one court they'll be playing till the wee hours of the morning......maybe 2am.

nadline , 12/5/11 11:07 AM

Fed meant of course the final best of 5 andwhy not..

I personally feel you should not have to change the 3set format for 1000 series. It would be almost impossible to play them back to back.

I see Rafa has pulled the plug on the DC 2012. That is the most honest way to do so. he usually pulls out of the away matches anyway.

Sienna , 12/5/11 11:32 AM

ha-ha-ha,
Well one of the reasons Federer's 5 set record is nowhere to be seen, is because few manage to get him to that stage of a match.
But when they do, well they must fancy their chances (hello Rafa & Jo!)
I would also like to see 5 set finals, I just don't think they would do Roger too many favours.
That's all,
Oh yes one other thing,
Watch your mouth Sienna, I don't appreciate your tone.....

Sosueme , 12/5/11 11:43 AM

I dont care about you Sue.

You obviously no nothing about tennis and that is why you loko at a certain stat bewildered and full of ignorance.
Of course Fed is such angreat player that he normally finishes best of 5 before the fifth is needed. When he does needs to play a fifth set obviously he is either of or his opponent is playing great tennis. So it is not at all strange that his record is slightly less then others. Others will tend to lose in 3 or 4 sets where Fed seems to more often make it into a fifth.

Sienna , 12/5/11 11:50 AM

This is simply one of the ways Roger is trying to make out that everything was harder in his day when he ruled the roost.
It's a legacy statement.
When everyone knows that for quite a while then it was SO much easier ;-)
Everyone that is bar some desperate irrational fanboys/girls who choose not to live in reality

Sosueme , 12/5/11 11:51 AM

"I dont care about you Sue..."

Oh you'll care, if you continue with that patronising tone. I'll make you.
Trust me on that one.

Sosueme , 12/5/11 11:57 AM

Sue you will dwindle down back under the stone you normally live your wasted life. So do not attemp to threathen me or something. I'll ... you up.

Sienna , 12/5/11 12:01 PM

Anytime, anywhere, anyhow ;-)
And learn English b&@ch!

Sosueme , 12/5/11 12:05 PM

So glad to see that we're all reasonable people, unlike those soccer hooligans who claim that fighting for their favorite club is the best way to show that they're a fan ;-)

Bonker , 12/5/11 12:24 PM

So I am definetely under your skin. Wow I am amazed at the power I have to mess up your ridiculous little life. Youre are her completely lost the plot . Try your luck on the spanish site see how you will fail to make an impression there.

Sienna , 12/5/11 12:36 PM

Don't flatter yourself Sienna,
If you knew me you'd know your whole superiority complex was in vain.
As for the whole subject of little lost lives...
Why don't you get one dear?
A little one is better that none at all.
The way I see it, you're basically here and probably everywhere there's a discussion about Roger 24/7!
There must be better things to do with your time than your thankless task of shielding Rogers deteriorating reputation, even in the Netherlands!

Sosueme , 12/5/11 1:04 PM

Sanju and Sue trying to bluff their way into tennistalk. Fed's fifth record is not at all impressive so he must be a terrible 5sets matchplayer. LOL
The stupidity is streaming out off their posts.
The have visited the ATPO site and clicked on 5th sets stats record and Saw that Fed hadnot an 80+% HAHA and with stat they consioder him to be a terrible 5 setmatch player.
OMG Sosueme what where you thinking? Sanju you actually looked at his latest 5setters he played and from there you took it a step further that it would not benefit Fed to play a 5set match final? LMAO You guys .....

Sienna , 12/5/11 1:09 PM

Sienna, don't even bother arguing with sosueme. He's never wrong (he thinks). Whatever you try to discuss with him you'll always lose in his eyes.
Hw thinks he knows it all. I've tried and failed to put some sense into that head but I think it's nearly impossible.

As for the "deteriorating reputation", either you need some new glasses or you're talking about some other Roger. Not talking about Roger Federer, surely.

bleck , 12/5/11 2:00 PM

A 5 set final wouldn't do much for the YEC image. You'd need to play all 5 set matches, and with players dinged up at the end of a long season that's not gonna happen. The YEC remains a very nice and lucrative showcase for the top 8 players but that's about it.

I also think the final of a tournament should be played under the same conditions as the matches that had to be won to get there. That said, 5 set masters finals did produce some great finals but it was killing the finalists for their next week's play.

Ramara , 12/5/11 2:17 PM

I've tried to find Federer in the ATP all time 5th set record,
And I couldn't find him at all!
As I said, its probably mostly down to him being such a good player that he has closed things off so quickly before, but clearly there is some potential weakness there also. Going on at least.
Next year he's 31 & shall have been on the tour for 14 years!
Don't delude yourself people, every champion goes into decline.
As for you Bleck, well your misguided arrogance is showing again.
The reason you cannot talk 'sense' to me is because you make very little in the first place. Disagreeing with a character such as you is hardly the same as believing one is omniscient.
Now if you want to discuss Federer or anyone else with me going on.
Watch your mouths!
I don't mind robust disagreements but I will not tolerate a pair of toothless internet bag ladies with delusions of grandeur getting above their station at my expense.
I get it, you love Roger federer, perfectly understandable he's a great player.
So, if you don't like what I say here's my advice:
Go away! Ignore me, talk among yourselves about how wonderful Roger is which is all you really want to do anyway.
But I will not indulge you in your sycophancy & over defensiveness when it comes to him, because I do not share your feelings on the matter.
At least the Nadal fans have a thicker skin than any of you do.
Do we have an understanding?

Sosueme , 12/5/11 3:05 PM

You can sit on it sue. I dont mind what you say.
Youve got nothing on me and I twist yourmind like the litle twirl you are.
Yep you read that one right.
You litle fhead. You talk a big mouth and when someone returns the courtesy you start to foulmouth big time. Ypoure mother should conviscate your laptop nitwit.

Sienna , 12/5/11 3:19 PM

sue, ROFL. Why are you so worked up? this is just tennis for god's sake. lol

bleck , 12/5/11 3:26 PM

Sienna you're nothing but redundant, loveless old hag with clearly no social life & zero friends.
I doubt Federer would even notice you if you dropped dead in front him.
Too bad as he has turned you into an imbecile, or were you always one?
Anyway, Kisses!
;-)

Sosueme , 12/5/11 4:04 PM

Auw...

Sienna , 12/5/11 4:38 PM

Nadline im Impressed and also in a slight state of shock that you agree with something Roger said haha. But yeah I agree with you, it should be a 5 set final, although you could argue that since all the player's matches are against top 8 players then that makes it harder to win and therefore more prestigous, difficult one! Again I agree with nadline and I don't think he's saying it for his benefit, with his poor 5 set record and winning it in its current format, and even if he is who cares? He is just doing what a normal person does and looking out for himself.

rbennett , 12/5/11 11:10 PM

I'd like to see best of five set matches in 1000 Masters final and in WTF Semies and Final, that would be great :D

OnTheRise , 12/6/11 12:18 AM

Sosueme, 12/5/11 4:04 PM

ROFL.
