  • Diplomat Federer says strike idea now dead

    11/26/11 3:10 PM | Johan Lindahl
Diplomat Federer says strike idea now dead Reasonable Roger Federer has come down hard on last September's wild strike talk on the ATP with the head of the Player Council rubbishing the idea first stirred up by Andy Murray amid the frustration of the shambolic US Open.

"(A strike) has never been an option really, in my opinion. The whole boycott thing was brought up a few months ago," said the 30-year-old Swiss, a born diplomat.

"It's nonsense, it's not going to happen any time soon. Things are good right now, so I don't see a reason why we should just boycott. There's absolutely no reason for it."

Murray and Andy Roddick had voiced the opinion that players need a shorter season and a larger cut of the Grand Slam financial pie along with a voice in determining when weather conditions (rain) make it unsafe to play.

The 2012 season will already be somewhat shorter, an end achieved by cramming the Paris Masters up next to the London year-end event without any days in between.

Federer says that issue can't be taken any further under the current tennis calendar configuration. "Next year's season is going to be shortened by two weeks.

"That's I think as much as we can squeeze it really because otherwise a lot of tournaments would have to go or we would have four tournaments the same week. I don't think is a very smart idea, to be honest, for the game."

Take a chill pill dude. Roger is the boss!

numero , 11/26/11 7:14 PM

You tell 'em numero. Roger bosses them around on court and leads tennis the way into the next era!

Sienna , 11/26/11 8:47 PM

Yeah, he led them until end 2007, and let Rafa took over the new era from 2008 onwards. Nole may be leading another era from now onwards.

My english isnot that bad is it Luckystar?

When I say leadS then that would mean presenttence or would'nt it ?

Rafa never leaded tennis in any sort or way. He occupied the #1 spot for a few weeks but that is all.

Sienna , 11/27/11 8:16 AM

Yep your English is quite bad, not 'leaded' but 'led'.

Fed's era had ended in 2007 or early 2008. He did lead others into the next era, by handing over the lead into the safe hands of Rafa in 2008, the beginning of the Rafa era. Rafa's era is
shorter than Fed's, about two and a half years, with Fed acting as a back up when Rafa was
injured. Is 2011 the beginning of a new era, that of Nole's? We shall see.

So I really don't see Fed leading others into the next era NOW, he's obviously not the leader to begin with. How can the no.3 guy be leading? The leader this year is clearly Novak Djokovic, however unwilling you are to acknowledge it! The leader of the pack is clearly the one who's no.1 and winner of most slams this year, not the one who wins three indoor hardcourt events, simple as that!

Lucky,

We will talk again in 2014 WTF.

newfangkc , 11/27/11 6:32 PM

2014? You sure all these people, or rather all of us are still around? Let's talk about 2012 instead!

luckystar , 11/27/11 9:11 PM

lol. calm down luckystar. Roger is the ATP chairman. He participated also in the meeting over many years.
Simultaneously with a player, he has spoken as chairman.

Novak will become the chairman when Roger's retire. don't worry
