World No. 1 Novak Djokovic fell to 1-2 in Group A after falling to compatriot Janko Tipsarevic early Friday. The top seed needs group leader David Ferrer to defeat Tomas Berdych in order to qualify for the semifinal.
World No. 1 Novak Djokovic suffered his second loss of the tournament, having stumbled during his match with countryman Janko Tipsarevic. Tipsarevic dropped the opening set, then rallied through to a three-set win, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
After splitting the first two sets, Tipsarevic went ahead 2-0 in the decider. The 27-year-old passed through to match point in the 9th game. Tipsarevic completed the win on his third match point, as Djokovic netted a forehand.
"He deserved to win," said Djokovic. "He was the better player in the second part of the match. It's obvious it's never easy to perform against somebody you know very well. Regardless who is across the net, obviously you want to win. That was the case today. But it wasn't meant to be. I'm glad he got the chance to play and got the chance to win as well. It can give him a lot of confidence for next year."
"I felt that the tides changed at the beginning of the second set, where I managed to get out of my first two or three service games," Tipsarevic explained. "It was always deuce, advantage, deuce, advantage. And once I managed to survive those couple of games, I was always and constantly putting pressure on Novak's serve until the end of the match."
Tipsarevic ended the day with 21 winners and four aces.
