  • Federer looking to go 3 for 3 in group play vs. Fish

    11/24/11 3:38 AM | Cheryl Murray
Federer looking to go 3 for 3 in group play vs. Fish Roger Federer, who has been in outstanding form all week, will take on American Mardy Fish in the last of the round robin matches.

Mardy Fish has failed to win a match this week so far. He took a set from Rafael Nadal, but he was defeated in straight sets at the hands of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. The American will now face Roger Federer, who just dismantled Nadal in their round robin meeting.

Fish has managed to get a single win over Federer in 7 tries. Their last match-up came in the Cincinnati Masters final in 2010. Fish was close to taking that match, but Federer is in much better form now than he was then.

Federer won the titles in Basel and Paris as a prelude for the Tour Finals. The Swiss has easily been the best player of the top 8. Fish, who is recovering from a groin injury sustained during the Paris Masters, will go into this match as a serious underdog.

Prediction – Federer in straight sets.

Fish is determined to take to the court in spite of being hobbled by his injury. One trembles to think how many pain-killer injections it has taken for him to get this far.

Can someone please tell what the point is for this match? I like and admire Fish, he is a decent man, and excellent professional, but he does not stand a chance!

Another boring Fed win...............................

rafaisthebest , 11/24/11 2:17 PM

@RFIB, this is for 200 Points, lol.. but I do get your point

RMadhu , 11/24/11 3:14 PM

Every televised match of Fed is a pleasure to watch. So happy to be able to watch him play without the anxiety of the possibility to lose.
Come On ROger!

Sienna , 11/24/11 4:02 PM

One set all.

nadline , 11/24/11 4:26 PM

I take my hat off to Fish. Hobbled he may be but he making this more competitive than anyone thought it would be. lol.

And Sienna dont tell me this is a 'dead' match please.

ed251137 , 11/24/11 4:28 PM

mmm A clearly compromised Mardy Fishy takes a set off of the Nadal Destroyer of the other day.
Interesting ; )

Sosueme , 11/24/11 4:29 PM

Roger playing so bad. FIsh is going to take it....

Emiliano55 , 11/24/11 4:29 PM

No Emiliano, there is no way Federer will allow that.

ed251137 , 11/24/11 4:31 PM

Well, it seems Roger woke up from his nap....

Emiliano55 , 11/24/11 4:37 PM

The net is closing in on Fish.

nadline , 11/24/11 4:42 PM

Roger now in top gear and winning 92% of points on first serve.

ed251137 , 11/24/11 4:56 PM

Mardy had his chances.

nadline , 11/24/11 5:01 PM

Fed wins the 3rd RR match in 3 sets... 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.

RMadhu , 11/24/11 5:02 PM

Well done Federer. Not exactly a surprise result!

But congratulations nevertheless to Fish for hanging on in till the last moment.

ed251137 , 11/24/11 5:05 PM

15 matches and counting...

Roger did well saving his best for the important matches.

bleck , 11/24/11 5:12 PM

Congrats Fed fans. Not a repeat of the other night but he got the job done none the less. Lost concentration in the second set but pulled it back for the third. Some excellent net coverage by MardyF and he served well but I thought at one point he was going to take a seat in the crowd, lol!

mojo , 11/24/11 5:13 PM

federer shows some signs of vulnerability .............. serve goes down sometime we will have to see if this happens in senis or not

isfand , 11/24/11 6:00 PM

To say that Federer lost his concentration in the 2nd set is not to give Mardy credit for a well played set. Even Federer admitted that he thought he might lose.

nadline , 11/24/11 6:11 PM

1 more win for yearending ATP#3, That would be a formidable achievement. He was death and barried by the nadal fans a month ago and now he is in a better state, shape fysically and mentally then the last 5 years,

Sienna , 11/24/11 7:11 PM

Hi Nadine, Wasn`t taking any credit from MardyF, he served well and displayed some excellent net coverageand a strong backhand, but Feds concentration wavered in the second set, its happened a few times recently and no doubt he and his team will be working to rectify this ( the commentator remarked on this too) in time for the semis.

Sienna, he`s certainly in good shape physically and playing really well, looks like he`ll take the #3 :(

mojo , 11/24/11 8:32 PM

@ rafaisthebest I am damn sure, this man is anything but far from someone who admires Tennis in any way, or is complete insane or just a crooked fanatical Nadal fan, otherwise how could he find Federer game, something which is widely considered to be the most beautiful thing on any sports, boring??

I hope he has got a good treatment with the good thrashing that Federer gave to his idol, and then repeated by Tsonga in London to send him packing for good! And as if that was not enough, he must have gone hysterical seeing the same fate his idol has to meet throughout this year in the hands of Novak including the big ones in the slams; :)

solitudine , 11/25/11 2:24 AM

Sienna, no matter what Nadal fans think or write about Federer, take my word, Federer is way ahead of Nadal in every department and surfaces except clay. And no matter what Nadal's achievements are so far, he can't match Federer if not by anything, but alone in fitness and I can't see him going on for so long at peak form just as Federer is doing at this age. That is indeed another aspect of greatness of Federer, you see it or not. :)
He has given all indication that his reign is almost set to end within a very short time from now and he is no more formidable in his favorite clay these days.

solitudine , 11/25/11 2:35 AM

A lot of people find Federer mind blowingly BORING.

nadline , 11/25/11 8:52 AM

nadline, ATP World Tour Fans' Favourite: Roger for the 9th straight year.

There must be a lot more people that find his game interesting than those who don't.

bleck , 11/25/11 9:57 AM

"1 more win for yearending ATP#3, That would be a formidable achievement. He was death and barried by the nadal fans a month ago and now he is in a better state, shape fysically and mentally then the last 5 years"

Sienna, Poor Andy, he possibly won't even achieve the baby steps he sets for himself let alone win a GS.

But he is too good not to win a slam, I just don't think it'll happen next year. Maybe in 2013 when nada, djokovic and federer will be more spent.

bleck , 11/25/11 10:01 AM

well, Fed seems to take the opportunity when it is given to him...he was not able to beat Rafa at RG, Tsonga at Wimby and Nole at USO when they were all playing much better than now...Rafa and Nole are used up now, especially Rafa who has not been at his best during this whole season...and yet he played so many finals and was beaten by the best player at the time so what is there to be done...just accept it and live with it...but all those matches were tough and physically and mentally demanding....Now when Nole, Rafa and Andy are taxed with those hard fought battles and can hardly move due to the injuries, emotional exhaustion or tiredness, Fed is there to shine...great tactics indeed...he is a wise planner, a guy who does not force himself to the limits and he is not injury prone...

He just outsmarted everyone and he will be rewarded for that with another WTF title...

natashao , 11/25/11 10:14 AM

@bleck , 11/25/11 9:57 AM

It's a fix.

nadline , 11/25/11 10:36 AM

My question is: is Fed going to pour scorn on his championship win (because that is what it will be!) in the absence of "top competition" like he did with Muzza's Asian swing?

He really needs lessons in humility....................

rafaisthebest , 11/25/11 11:02 AM

Well... easy win for Federer. Cruised through the match, hardly breaking a sweat. Fish couldn't play better yesterday and Federer didn't seem that motivated... he lost a set, but this was not a close contest.

Let's see who his SF opponent will be :-)

Bonker , 11/25/11 11:31 AM

yeah, nadline, I happen to agree with you...it's a fix...ATP does not want Fed to retire at this point...Fed not wining any GSs this year was a scary part for the ATP that Fed may decide to retire and then they would end up losing so much money...this way they encourage him to stay...it's not that I think Fed should not stay... I actually think it is great that Fed is around...his matches are more even now and therefore more interesting to watch...

natashao , 11/25/11 11:40 AM

nadline , 11/25/11 8:52 AM ,

You rely on some stupid articles to show your fed hate?
Fed is a not a rockstar like Nadal, its true that RAFA has got more fans from the other gender.
Where as Fed's play is appreaciated by men, who enjoys his game/class and not rely on his sex appeal or emotions etc.

sabs , 11/25/11 12:16 PM

So Rafael Nadal is a match fixer.. !!! LMAO !!!!

tomnjerry2 , 11/25/11 3:30 PM

"Maybe in 2013 when nada, djokovic and federer will be more spent"

Interesting, Roger hasn't won a slam for 2 years after winning 16.
Is that because Rafa & Novak weren't `spent` enough for it to occur?
