  • Group A - Ferrer stuns Djokovic

    11/23/11 10:39 PM | Kelli DeMario
Group A - Ferrer stuns Djokovic World No. 5 David Ferrer improved his record to 2-0 at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, having ousted world No. 1 Novak Djokovic in straight sets. By virtue of his straight-set win, the veteran is through to the semifinals.

Fifth seed David Ferrer is 2-0 in round-robin competition following his comprehensive victory over top seed Novak Djokovic. The 29-year-old held eight consecutive service games, through to a 6-3, 6-1 success in 75 minutes.

A well-struck forehand pass gave Ferrer a 4-3 edge in the opening set. The Spaniard held set point at 5-3, then closed as Djokovic netted a forehand.

Ferrer continued his strong effort to lead 3-0 in set two. He collected an insurance break to 5-1 on a backhand error from Djokovic. A final forehand miss from the world No. 1 sealed the match in straight sets.

Ferrer completed the match with four aces and four of seven break points converted.

He will conclude Group play against Tomas Berdych, who took out alternate Janko Tipsarevic early Wednesday.

I thought I understood the rankings in RR.... Until I saw this..
So this means Tipsarevic is out? I guess he can only get 1 win and 1 loss as to Berdych with 1 win and two losses!

Semi-final Qualifying Procedure
At the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, the final standings of each group shall be determined by the first of the following methods that apply:

a) Greatest number of wins;

b) Greatest number of matches played;
Comment: 2-1 won-loss record beats a 2-0 won-loss record; a 1-2 record beats a 1-0 record.

c) Head-to-head results if only two (2) players are tied,

d) If three (3) players are tied, then:

i) If three (3) players each have one (1) win, a player having played less than all three (3) matches is automatically eliminated and the player advancing to the single elimination competition is the winner of the match-up of the two (2) players tied with 1-2 records; or
ii) Highest percentage of sets won; or
iii) Highest percentage of games won; or
iv) The player positions on the South African Airways ATP Rankings as of the Monday after the last ATP World Tour tournament of the calendar year.
v) If (i), (ii), (iii) or (iv) produce one (1) superior player (first place), or one (1) inferior player (third place), and the two (2) remaining players are tied, the tie between those two (2) players shall be broken by head-to-head record.

Comment 1: 1 player has 3 wins and the other 3 players have 1 win. Of the 3 players with 1 win, 1 player has only played in 2 matches while the other 2 players have played 3 matches. The player who has only played 2 matches is eliminated and then the 2 remaining players revert back to head-to-head results with the winner of their match advancing to the semi-finals.

Comment 2: 1 player has 3 wins and the other 3 players have 1 win and they all have played 3 matches. The tie-break for % of sets won has 1 player with a better % than the other two. This player advances to the semi-final round.

Comment 3: 3 players have 2 wins and the other player has 0 wins. The player with 0 wins is eliminated. Of the 3 players with 2 wins, they are ordered by their % of sets won. This produces a 1, 2 & 3 order and the players finishing 1 and 2 move to the semi-final round and the player finishing 3 in % of sets won is eliminated. The player with the best % of sets won is the winner of the group.

Comment 4: 3 players have 2 wins and the other player has 0 wins. The player with 0 wins is eliminated. Of the 3 players with 2 wins, 1 player?s sets won-loss is 5-2 for 71.43%; the other 2 players both have a 4-3 record in sets for 57.14%. In this case there is 1 superior player (71.43%) and the remaining 2 players are tied; it now reverts to the head to head result of the 2 remaining players with the winning player advancing as group runner-up.

Comment 5: 3 players have 2 wins and the other player has 0 wins. The player with 0 wins is eliminated. Of the 3 players with 2 wins, 2 have set won-loss records of 5-3 (62.5%) while the other player is 4-3 (57.14%). In this case we have 1 inferior player (57.14%) and he is eliminated. The remaining two players both advance to the semi-finals with the winner of their head-to-head match advancing as the group winner.

Comment 6: 3 players have 2 wins and the other player has 0 wins. The player with 0 wins is eliminated. Of the 3 players with 2 wins, all have played 3 matches and all 3 have set won-loss records of 5-4 (55.56%). In this case we move to % of games won. The % of games won breaks down like this: 44-40 for 52.38%, 45-43 for 51.14% and 44-43 for 50.57%. This produces a 1, 2 and 3 order of the group and the number 1 player in % of games won is the group winner while the player finishing 2nd in % of games won advances to the semi-finals as the group runner-up. The player with the 3rd best % of games won is eliminated.

yes, Tipsa out

RickyDimon , 11/23/11 10:59 PM

Fantastic from Ferrer!!

smr , 11/23/11 11:22 PM

So it is safe to say Novak is through because he won the berdych match?
only if Djoker loses and Berdych wins then Berdych qualifys.

Semi will be most likely Federer-Djokovic . Tsonga/Nadal - Ferrer

Sienna , 11/23/11 11:28 PM

no, if they both win then Berdych has a chance

RickyDimon , 11/24/11 12:01 AM

Well... Another bad day in office... And to make it worse...on the other side David ( but this time he was Goliath ) full of fire and lightning...
All congrats to Spaniard... Beautifull tennis...
Novak was completely outplayed. If David continues like this... He will be a major threath to anyone.
RESPECT!

zare , 11/24/11 12:14 AM

Yes... Tipsy is gone... but with 70000$ in his pocket... Not so bad...
And he has WTF in his record...

zare , 11/24/11 12:19 AM

I just saw the replay of Djoker/Ferrer! Wow is all I can say! Congratulations to Ferrer for playing some fantastic tennis. Djoker off his game with all those UE's. This is a big surprise.

Berdy beat Tipsy in a nailbiter. At least this time he held it together to get the win. I will wait for others to figure who has to win what. It's too crazy.

Nativenewyorker , 11/24/11 3:04 AM

if ferrer beats berdych djokovic qualifies no matter what if berdych wins in straight sets he qualifies no matter what but if berdych wins in 3 sets then nole has to win his match in 2 sets otherwise berdych qualifies

isfand , 11/24/11 4:46 AM

Ferrer will surely top his group.. Fed gets to play either Berdy or Novak..I think Fed can handle both but it may go to a 3 setter (esp against Berdy)..

Rafa v/s Ferrer..90% times Rafa but this Ferrer knows Rafa is not his usual Rafa and may beat him

Tsonga v/s Ferrer : I think Ferrer will easily prevail due to consistency

Final : If Roger v/s Rafa : Roger but not a beatdown for sure..
If Roger v/s Ferrer : Roger
If Roger v/s Tsonga : Roger

basically this tourney is now Rogers to lose

sanju , 11/24/11 5:31 AM

Crazy. I saw the first two games and went to sleep, and I had a feeling this was going to happen, seeing how Ferrer was chasing balls so much. I desperately want to see Nole pick himself up here.

samprallica , 11/24/11 5:54 AM

A master strategist like Nole would most probably avoid a meeting with RAFA in this WTF.
as he knows RAFA is the major threat to his Slams and hence would like to keep his current domination against RAFA going.

So,
Roger vs Berdy
Ferrer vs Rafa

sabs , 11/24/11 5:58 AM

first of all ferrer is not guarenteed a top spot and secondly it's not sure whether nadal will be able to beat tsonga

isfand , 11/24/11 6:03 AM

isfand..Ferrer is guaranteed..why is he not..even if he loses to Berdy in straights he would have won 4/6 sets which is 67%

If Novak beats Tipsy in straights..he would have won 4/8 = 50% sets

If Berdy beats Ferrer in straights, he would have won 5/8 - 62% sets
If Berdy beats Ferrer in 3, he would have won 5/9 = 55% sets

So in every way possible, Ferrer is the topper as above is worst scenario for Ferrer and it will be a 3 way tie and will boil down to % of sets won

sanju , 11/24/11 6:08 AM

correction above If Novak beats Tipsy in straights..he would have won 4/7 = 57% sets

sanju , 11/24/11 6:09 AM

sanju if ferrer is beaten by berdych and djokovic loses ferrer will qualify 2nd and will face federer in semis (due to head to head )

isfand , 11/24/11 6:12 AM

isfand yes..then its 2 way tie..not 3..you are right and then head to head comes into play..but Djoko losing to Tipsa..tough chance of it happening..

In short if Rafa sumhow gets past Tsonga..he will surely not play Djoko as Djoko can in no way be No 1 in his group now..he can at most be 2nd it will be either Ferrer or Berdy for him

Guys who do u think RAfa will prefer? Berdy or Ferrer? I think Berdy as he makes more UE than Ferrer :-)

sanju , 11/24/11 6:16 AM

first nadal should beat tsonga and it is looking tough at the moment ....... rest would be seen afterwards if nadal plays well he can beat both but first up is tsonga for him

isfand , 11/24/11 6:19 AM

isfand..if Nadal plays well, he can beat anybody..thats certain ..

sanju , 11/24/11 6:26 AM

well tsonga is tougher than berdych or ferrer or even djokovic in his current form

isfand , 11/24/11 6:32 AM

So has Tipsa pulled out, does that bring Almagro in?

nadline , 11/24/11 7:28 AM

I don't see how Nole would be fearing Rafa or anyone at this stage. Anyone knows its a new year, a whole knew environment when they step out next year. Momentum helps, but it isn't necessarily the defining factor.

A Nole-Rafa semifinal in their present state would be a sight though. I don't know who is playing worse.

samprallica , 11/24/11 7:48 AM

I reckon if you are ace at Soduko you can fathom out the likely permutations for the SFs. It's beyond me :-(

Sampra @ 7:48AM ROFL

ed251137 , 11/24/11 8:06 AM

Fantastic result for Ferrer - he played great and deserved it. Keep going David and good luck in your next match against Berdych.

schatz , 11/24/11 12:34 PM

Meh. Ferrer played a great first set and the Djoker tanked the 2nd. No way does he hit that many shots into the net unless he's trying. He just didn't need to grind out a long tough match - he'll get whatever he wants from Tipsy who's out of he competition so that'll be an exhibition match. Call it strategy if you like. I call it the reason I don't like the rr format. The people who pay for tickets expect to see championship matches, not exhibitions, like Fed v Fish today.

Ramara , 11/24/11 7:06 PM

People pay for tickets for an exhibition tournament and players don't try any less.

Yea, Nole wanted to lose in straight sets and 6-1 in the 2nd, just to sightly tarnish his amazing 2011 record. I can just imagine him thinking: You knowwhat, I won't try and win the 2nd rubber, in fact I'll play as many balls as possible into the net.
