World No. 7 Tomas Berdych kept his hope for a semifinal berth alive, having held on to defeat alternate Janko Tipsarevic early Wednesday. The Czech star saved match point en route to a three-set victory.
Seventh seed Tomas Berdych successfully rebounded after a tough loss to world No. 1 Novak Djokovic on Monday. The 26-year-old rallied to defeat world No. 9 Janko Tipsarevic in three sets, 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(6).
With each player claiming a set, Berdych went ahead 5-3 in the final-set 'breaker. Tipsarevic recovered to take the next three points. He had match point at 6-5 but was unable to close the contest. A costly double-fault handed a 7-6 lead to Berdych, who completed the day with a forehand winner.
"I was a bit unlucky on Monday," Berdych explained. "I got luckier here. So one-all. Before the tiebreak, I was feeling pretty good, I would say pretty confident. (The) last few games that I was serving was kind of quick (and) easy. But as long the tiebreak went, it was really close."
Berdych ended the two-hour, 27-minute match with nine aces.
He is slated to face world No. 5 David Ferrer in the final match of the Group stage.
